HOOVER (v.o.)

Unfortunately, not everyone had the Misery

Kid’s iron will of stupidity.

FADE IN:

INTERIOR – CHRIS COLOIACOVO’S FAMILY ROOM – NIGHT

CHRIS, a slender 16-year-old, lies on the couch in the typically suburban family room of his parents’ house. The familiar soft tapping begins at the screen door behind the couch. Chris gets up and goes to the door, opens it. At his feet is the Snake.

SNAKE

Where is the rope, Chris? Find the rope.

Chris leaves the door in a trance and goes downstairs.

CUT TO:

INTERIOR – CHRIS COLOIACOVO’S BASEMENT – NIGHT

Chris walks down the steps and goes to his father’s workbench. There he paws through the various tools and other objects until he finds a length of rope. He picks it up and turns to one of the thin windows near the top of the walls where the Snake has positioned itself.

SNAKE

Use the rope, Chris. Use it tonight.

Chris begins to walk back upstairs.

FADE TO BLACK

HOOVER (v.o.)

Fortunately, some others were harder to convince.

FADE IN:

INTERIOR – MISERY KID’S BEDROOM – NIGHT

The Snake comes tapping at the Misery Kid’s window with its tongue. No response from the Kid, who continues sleeping. More tapping from the Snake. Still no response from the Kid. The Snake bangs his head hard on the window three times. The Kid bolts upright, eyes half-open, hair going in about one million directions. The Snake bobs back and forth.

SNAKE

Use the razor blade. Use it tonight.

The Kid stares at the Snake for several moments.

MISERY KID

Snakes are gay.

The Kid slams back down onto his bed, pulls the pillow over his head. The Snake shakes its head and slowly slithers away.

FADE TO BLACK

HOOVER (v.o.)

There were none of the usual indicators: no

notes, no messages, no strange behaviors.

FADE IN:

INTERIOR – CAROLYN BREWSTER’S BEDROOM – NIGHT

CAROLYN, a pretty 17-year-old, is sleeping in her bedroom. The same soft tapping begins at her window. Carolyn wakes up, goes to the window, opens it. The Snake is there.

SNAKE

Find the gun, Carolyn.

In a kind of trance, Carolyn turns and leaves the bedroom.

CUT TO:

INTERIOR – CAROLYN’S PARENTS’ BEDROOM – NIGHT

Carolyn moves quietly through her parents’ bedroom, where they sleep soundly. Carolyn goes to the closet, opens it and pulls out an old shoebox. She opens the shoebox and pulls out a small revolver. Carolyn takes the gun and walks out of the room.

CUT TO:

INTERIOR – CAROLYN BREWSTER’S BEDROOM – NIGHT

Carolyn walks back into her bedroom with the gun, waiting at the window for instructions. The Snake weaves back and forth hypnotically.

SNAKE

Use the gun, Carolyn. Use it tonight.

Carolyn walks away from the window, OFF SCREEN. There are some clicking sounds, then a gunshot, and a thud as Carolyn’s body hits the floor. The Snake slithers away. Moments later, Carolyn’s MOTHER and FATHER run into the room, flick on the lights and begin to scream.
